So how did the eggs do that you got out of the eating (refridgerated) carton do ?
Did they hatch ?
Curious...my refridgerator is about 40...that is pretty cold !

now i found what i was supposed to answer about, sorry!!

i had three that were definitely refrigerated from this batch. when i decided to incubate, i started setting aside fresh eggs --i think on the 10th or 11th. i set on the 15th, and when i did, i checked the refrigerated eating eggs just to be sure there wasn't one from a BJ that i could add, just to increase my chances. i found three, one from the 7th and two from the 9th (i usually label my eggs as i gather just so we know who is laying/how often and so we can check fertility and eat the oldest first). so i marked them with an R and put them in!

one from the 9th (moxie9) hatched out no problem--it was the 3rd to pip and the 3rd to hatch, and is doing great-- but the one from the 7th (maeve7), and the other from the 9th (maeve9) did not. that one from the 7th was really pushing it...8 days out of the fridge, you are going to lose some chance of development, but 8 days in the fridge is really a lot!

I would love to see them, and all on all your older hens, or just one ?

I have noticed the spur on some not all the older hens, but that it shows up only on older hens.

Yes javachick, It's a common term here for the last few days before the hatch day when the humidity is raised, eggs are taken out of the turners and the major nail-chewing begins!!

yes, when we stop turning and candling and fussing with the eggs.
Nail biting is right !!
And up at all hours, nose pressed against the little window on the bator!

so you must not use an incubator, huh?

Ah actually, I have always used an incubator. First the Little Giant tabletop models (3 of them), then changed to the Genesis Hova Bator with a pre-set electronic thermostat with the egg turner(2 of them) which I love. And I just recently bought a GOF Sportsman wafer style off of craigslist.com. It is an older model and I am checking to see if I can convert it to a digital model. I have not use this one yet so I don't know if I like it or not. I bought the bigger incubator because I have high hopes! lol

Currently, I am using my Genesis Hova Bator with the pre-set electronic thermostat and egg turner. I love this incubator and have found that if the egg is fertile it has the best chance to hatch in this baby.

I sometimes raise silkies for broody hens but gave most of my silkies to my daughter-in-law Jennifer, she fell in love with them. I still have 2 young blue partridge silkie hens. I like calm breeds of birds. lol My granddaughter Olivia handled these two little ladies so much they want you to pick them up. I put them in with a new young rooster I bought who was totally wigging out everytime you opened his pen to feed and water him, so after his quarntine (3 weeks) I put these girls with him and it seems to be calming him down. I currently don't have a silkie rooster for these girls. It was funny to see him stare at these two very puffy ladies in his pen. lol I can get in and change the water and feed without too much fuss now.

I guessed that the term "lockdown" was day 18 in the incubating process. I just had never heard it before. I just called it "Day 18".
Learning something new everyday is good.
