Icelandic Chickens

I love this thread. Love these birds - teacup picture is TOO CUTE.
My 'coop' here is basically a giant shaded bird cage with a small loft- style roosting area that is more protected, with as the above poster suggested, the opaque plastic roofing material. They love their dust baths, and so far they pant during the hottest part of the day but they seem okay. Plenty of water. Still don't think I should risk this breed, though.

I made sure to get only breeds that said "any climate", although I do want a Marans, which said cold climate, but a lot of the Marans breeders are here in Florida and they seem to do fine.

The weather was nice today and we decided to let The Divine Miss M out of the silkie coop to show off her brood of baby Icelandics.

She taught them how to dig in the dirt:

Everyone was very curious and came to have a look.

Isi manned his guard station to watch for intruders.

While scanning the skies for an aerial attack he completely missed a ground invasion.

Major security breach at the silkie coop!

Isi protected them while Miss M showed them around. He is the best roo ever!

They learned to dig for bugs in the grass.

Mama kept a watchful eye out while herding them back to the safety of the silkie coop.

With the perimeter fencing secured, the occupants of the juvenile detention center were allowed out to free range too.

Meanwhile, the incubator Icelandic babies had to be content to enjoy one little ray of afternoon sun hitting their run.

I am lovin Isi .... what a sweetheart! The Divine Miss M is really doing a great job. Is she a first time broody? My first time broody (Silkie) quit after one week, and went back to laying eggs.

She is a first time broody and also the one I thought was a roo for the longest time. She only laid 2 or three eggs before going broody.

And Isi, what a good boy he is. Everything that you read about what a good roo should do and not do, he is spot on!

And yes, until Nifty prys the mouse out of my cold, dead hand, I WILL upload pictures!

Love the pics Mary! Especially the breach-too funny! Isi looks like a great rooster, protecting his women and children. What a great boy!

Lots of beautiful babies! I will be interested to see how they do in the heat here.

I can't wait to see pics when your geese break out of the prison walls and help themselves to the Warden's private pool.

I ordered my mist system today which should help with the heat. I only ordered for one area and Michael says he is going to put a system across the front of all the runs. That, with all the shade trees and water for cooling feet off, we should be ok. If not, we'll pack up and come to the foothills to stay with you until it cools off in the valley!

I think Michael is looking forward to a swim with the geese! He keeps reminding me what a great filter system we have!

Warden, I love the pictures but the narration is even better. Keep it up, hope no one is fashioning a gun out of suet. Never can tell.
