Naked Neck/Turken Thread

Pretty good lacing on him huh? He's the only one that good.. others are more/less pencilled or a Big Mess...

Yes she's barred.. but not blue. Not sure, their barring is strange.. here's her brother and I suspect pure for whatever it is making them so light:

He was born looking like a chick pure for barring, grew feathers mostly white with some being barred and now like this. Their mothers were light- pale grey color with wide barring.

Crosses with Moderns- done many times with both bantams and standard.. actually have bantam turken cross with bantam moderns right now. They're the lavender splits.. modern game bantam father was a lavender. They look more like regular birds, some with slightly longer legs, but not much. Feather is more like modern though- on shorter and harder side than long and soft. Will try to take pics soon.

Bummers the eggs were not fertile..

Hahaha! Slipped downwards you mean? Like pants falling down to ankles, kinda? Funny. And more like "Open Shirted Stud".

Go ahead with the cross. The naked neck does not affect leg feathering much, BUT normally in any cross between feather leg and clean leg, most chicks come out with sparse leg feathers. You can either cross them together or back to a pure brahma to get NN with better leg feathering..

If the NN hens are normal size or large fowl, it will be okay to let brahmas breed with them.. once the skin is past the thin and fragile stage if the brahmas are cockerels and still very clumsy at mating, that can sometimes accidentally tear the skin on young pullets. Skin is tough on hens though.

Thanks, Kev,

My Brahma boys are huge but mature and pretty expert in their technique! They're dopey and moulting at present, so it'll be next Spring..I do have some poultry saddles which I can use if things get a bit rough.

Dark Brahma X Black NN should look good......baldy neck with black pantaloons ....in theory anyway!

You are right about the feathered legs, every cross with the Brahma boys and girls have had fairly reasonable leg feathers.

I think I'll still get a 'pretty' NN boy for them too, as I would like more pure breeds.

LOVE that pencilled NN....very pretty bird.

Hi! These NN girls are from the black NN Green-Egger hen mated w/ the blue Barred Rock.
They are growing into nice, chunky girls and lay pretty dark green eggs!

There are a couple of Ameraucana girls in the pen as well.
Just for fun, I'm mating them with this handsome lad (hahaha) --- he's a splash Frizzle NN Green-Egger.

He really is pretty, just coming off a bad molt.

Dipsy Doodle Doo those cross breeds look amazing....and very pretty.

Your moulting boy looks like he is wearing a crown!

Love these chickens,

Sandie

Thanks!
Here's a barred NN sibling to the blue NN girls above:

And here is a splash smooth NN sibling to the splash Frizzle NN above:

You can barely see his feet, but they are feathered. Some from the cross inherit leg/foot feathering, some don't.
Haha, and his pal, Woodie.

Hey, Dark Brahmas are pencilled, you could make pencilled NN out of that eventually...

When shopping around for a dashing hunk for the hens, try to get a roo that either has a totally bare neck or a tiny bowtie. The ones with large bowties with feathers covering most of lower front of neck are not pure NN.. but if this is the only available one, you still can use him and pick out pure chicks.. it's easy.

Question for all of you-

Anybody have a totally bare necked bird or seen one? Especially with single comb, so pea combs and showgirls don't count here..

I have only one right now.. had some many years ago. Just don't see them very often. Went to feed store, there was a hatchery turken chick with a totally bare neck. ALMOST got it but did not...
