Attended our first Poultry

Show in 15 years last Saturday. Saw many of those fancy show carry crates. Bid on two of them in the silent auction. Did not win them.

Was suprised to see a long time friend and poultry judge using storage totes.

In fact, many were using them. Of course there were plenty of cardborad boxes and more expensive shipping boxes. Below are what we purchased yesterday at Fred's Discount Stores for $8.00 each. They are the clear Shelftotes by Sterilite. Was on sale for $8 each. Regular $12.99.

I used a hole saw and drilled two holes, about 2" below the rim, on both sides of each tub. My wife

wants me to add a third hole on each side.

Then we put fancy vinyl letters:

Look for us at the shows! Our new fancy carry totes will be under our birds coops!

Please post what you use!

My concern with these translucent plastic totes is that if any sun gets on them, that they could build up a lot of heat in a hurry. But I like being able to see inside, and I definitely like the various qualities of stackable, cleanable, affordable.

We have a couple plastic totes, but you have to put holes all over them for air flow. It gets pretty hot in the plastic bins.

You could cut a large square out of the lid and attach wire for more air flow.

The brits had some pretty fancy carry crates or thier birds we saw a couple years ago,, but the good old carborad box showed up there too.
There were some pretty inventive people , one lady had a big wicker basket that she had devided into three with three seperate lids with holes and the big lid that was origional to the wicker basket she said she liked it cause it was huge yet very lightweight and she toted 3 chickens per wicker basket. she could lift one lid at a time and take out a chicken to coop up for show without another one escaping. That was probably the best one Ive seen. the wicker breaths and has lot of air circ. she had cardboard panels in the bottom with sawdust. then there were some lightweight almost a balsa wood boxes that were nice all painted up with the farm name . again they had the 2 seperate devided spaces in the crate.

last show I went to ,I used the ol carboard box. The chickens like the radio on in the car, they get real quiet when the radio is playying but when I turn the car off to gas up or something they start singing.

I bought a rubbermaid box like you have, but I used one of those adjustable wire cookie cooling racks /stackable dish racks as a lid, So there's plenty of ventilation and I didn't have to cut holes in the sides.

Pet Taxi's that are on sale at garage sales, on craigslist etc. They work amazing well!

I use the darker colored storage units...I don't want my birds freaking out, plus I have them inside of my Aveo...so A/C is running. No worries about heat or being windblown.

Oh my, I keep it simple! I use the cardboard single nest box made by Horizion. Easy to load birds into, light weight, sturdy to use over and over again and only about $7 a piece when you buy them in bulk.
