Here are some "during construction" photos of my mandarin pens. As you can see, the covered shelter is actually two stories. The upper level includes four separate nest boxes. There is access to the back of the nest box for gathering eggs and adding bedding as needed. The lower section is a communal area where feed will be offered. Wood chips will cover the floor of both levels. All I really need to do is add black shingles then paint it barn red to match my call duck pen and chicken house. Oh, and add the decorative deck board trim along the top front. Then I can move it to location and add my mandarins.

I based the design on my call duck pen which can be seen below. I modified the design to suit mandarins and their nesting habits.

There is a pvc pipe attached to the bottom of the pool. There is a pvc ball valve at the end of the pipe. I simply turn the valve, and the water drains out from the pond.

Hi,

It seems like your call duck pen is about 4X8. Is that correct? I built one for my new ducklings similiar to that but it was 2X8 with a house box and a pool that I cover until they're ready to swim.

Question: How many call ducks can you put into your pen?? I've just hatched 4 calls and have another dozen eggs in the hatcher right now. If I get a 50% hatch, I'll have about 10 call ducklings

thanks for your reply,

Yes, the call duck pen is 4 ft by 8 ft. Ideally, I'd prefer to keep no more than 4 to 6 full size calls in the pen. But I suppose you could keep more. I've got 9 ducks in one right now, but that is going to change here shortly.

I miss have mandarins and want to build a pen like yours. My old pens were 14 by 14 and were covered in netting. But between coon, heavy snow and the crazy female mandarins i ended up selling what was left of 4 pairs.
