A lawyer friend of mine, after a tour of the chicken yard, rolled her eyes and said, "I swear, the way you dote on those birds, they're just like any pet and should be written into your will." We joked around about that, but it got me thinking...

If it would really upset you (and your kids) to know that others don't QUITE share your enthusiasm for Henrietta being part of the family as much as Rover is, well, that's why pet trusts and codicils for a will were invented. Henrietta can be re-homed and live out her life without becoming someone's dinner if something were to happen to you by establishing a pet trust, appointing a trusted executor or friend, etc.

My friend referred me to these sites:

http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/pet-care-tips/pet-trusts.html
http://www.nycbar.org/Publications/pub-provforpet.htm

There are five sample will provisions at the second site AND a "Sample Testamentary Trust for the Care of Horses and Farm Animals."

(I had to show THAT sample to hubby to convince him my sanity hadn't "flown the coop.")

Anyway, apologies if this topic has already been covered, but I wanted to share in case it hadn't.
