When my son was four he injured his finger severely and we had to let the blood out from under the nail. He was scared about the prospect of putting a hole in the nail of course, but was brave to try it when dad and I assured him it would be better. We heated a sewing pin at the stove and it went into the nail like butter. Not a single peep out of him, it didn't hurt at all and he had instant relief.
