peafowl pens

Yes, indeed, unpainted until the weather warms up. Paint can't be applied til we have sustained 60 degree weather. And only the buried posts are treated.

There is a 10 foot long, 4 foot tall roost in the run but they seem to prefer to cram themselves onto a 3 foot long 6 foot high post that was intended to just be a support beam. Whatever, as long as they are happy. I'm thinking to move the 4 foot one higher....I can probably move it up at least 4 more feet. Based on their roosting so far, they'd like that as they seem to want to be as high as possible.

Thanks for your feedback.

My inside pens varies in size from 8x8 holding a trio to my largest inside pen that is 12x12 which currently is empty until this weekend. My building is only 9' high at the peak but I placed all my perches strategicly(sp) to allow for train growth on my males this winter.I do have one inside pen that is 8x8 currently with 5 Purples using it.
Many here may say these pens are too small with the numbers of birds that are occupying them, but they are not breeding this time of year.My concern is keeping the elements at bay the best I can for another 2 months and getting them healthy, wormed and ready for spring breeding season in April. So far all my males inside this building have beautiful, perfect trains growing out and I'm sure all of them are at least 3' long so far and possibly my Silver Pieds is 4' long.Priorities change during breeding season and my outside pens are close to 10 sq ft per bird in most cases.

Hi everyone. I hope you don't mind me jumping in and adding pics of our new pea enclosure. We live in the high desert, where we have VERY cold nights (as low as 12 degrees recently) and warm days (as warm as 65). We also have sustained high winds from the SW, so I situated the enclosure to provide wind-protection as much as possible. I had considered buying a used a shed (there were so many on Craigslist) but I was told that they might not use it since they don't really like to go inside like chickens do. So finally we decided to build a 3 sided open lean-to type thing. We got the breeding trio a couple of weeks ago and since then I've noticed that they hang out in the lean-to during the day, but at night (even the coldest nights) they prefer to roost outside, on the tallest roost which is about 6 feet off the ground.

The entire enclosure is about 32x12. The far side (north) is made of of the existing chain link at the back of our property. Two other fenced sides (south and east) in the pic are formed from a dog kennel I bought on CL. The lean-to still needs paint, but we have to wait for the weather to warm up first.

Based on my reading (I have zero experience with peas) I put two nests in the corners, hoping they will lay there, tho right now they usually just snuggle there as a group during the day. The only real issue I've had so far is that sparrows and other small birds like to come in through the chain link and poo in the pea's water. I could wrap the fencing with chicken wire or extra netting, I suppose. Or develop a new watering system of some kind. My chickens are on a 5 gal bucket fed vinyle hose nipple waterer. I'm also concerned about safety and have considered putting an electric fence around it to deter predators, but haven't done that yet. I'll be even more concerned if they breed, and could use some advice about keeping the enclosure safe for babies.

I'd love to hear any feedback or suggestions from those of you with pea experience.

If you don't mind, what are the dimensions of your "shed". I really like the idea. Also, what size is the wire in your pen?

The shed is 12 wide x 8 deep x 8 tall in front and 6 in back. I just tossed out our drawing/materials list yesterday but if I can dig it out of the trash I'll post it. Maybe that will help?

One side of the pen is standard chain link, tho the bottom 2 feet are covered with chicken wire. The dog kennel sides are a 2 inch by 4 inch mesh.

Yep I found it, here's the drawing. Quality isn't great, sorry. Drawing on left is the footprint, on right is the side view. Partial materials list is at top right. Bottom stuff are some notes my DH wrote to himself along with some algebraic calculations that I don't understand. Disregard all that, lol! I do have lots more pics of the build in my albums. I think you should be able to look at those ifyou want. Basically, we dug holes for posts and placed them, built walls separately and then attached them to the posts, then put on roof struts, then added roofing plywood. HTH.

Beautiful pens unfortunately my pen is very small and I have 2 ibs who are mates and have 2 chicks but we are planning to buy more peas and make the pen huge
