MAJOR LICE Infestation in my Yard!!

Okay guys need some help with this one-

My chickens had lice I noticed a few weeks ago, eradicated the problem-or so I thought. Turned over a bowl that had been laying in the yard yesterday, it had been there for a while...and millions of tiny bugs were underneath! I poured Louse dust on them and then stamped all over them with my foot. I continued to inspect the yard and see they are EVERYWHERE!! They are the exact same bugs that were on my chickens. Tiny Straw colored with almost a tinier black spot in the middle. What do I do? Malathion the yard? Won't that hurt the girls?? I have a 1/3 acre and trying to dust it would cost hundreds of dollars. But they are literally on every square inch. It makes me itch just writing about it. Please help!!

OKay- liquid Sevin. do I let it dry completely before allowing the chickens back in the yard? Will it hurt my Tomatoes or Roses, Trees etc....I don't have Tractor Supply here. Would a good Feed & Tack have it there? I wasn't aware they could live on the ground like that. It's so gross.
 
Yes. Liquid sevin would be the way to go in this instance. You can get everything you need at a home improvement store or walmart. You need a sprayer and a bottle of the liquid sevin, follow the directions on the label for spraying your yard. It wont hurt your roses, tomatos etc...I use sevin dust on vegetables and roses. As a matter of fact you can get a canister of sevin dust as well and dust inside your chicken house, roosts and nests. Repeat dusting in 10 days. I'd repeat the liquid sevin spray on your yard in 10 days as well, and dont forget to do your chickens again in 10 days.
 
If you have vegetables or fruits, you need to use an insecticide that is okay for that; sevin is, although there are others as well. If you don't have fruits and vegies, then almost any insecticide will be fine. Yes, keep all animals out of the yard until the product dires. Malathion is fine as are permethrin or pyrethins. THere are also insecticides that give long lasting protection that you should consider; check in the flea/tick section of the pet store and you should find several sprays designed for using on yards and animal housing.

However, lice will not live off the birds, so you almost certainly have mites. Possibly chiggers or other nasties.

I don't think you have lice; they cannot live without a host. I agree with the posting above (by Sonoran Silkies) regarding chiggers, mites, or another pest, but not lice.

Thanks all for the great advice. I am going out tomorrow to get the stuff. As for tonight, researching if I in fact have the dreaded mite. Must be I'm thinking cause the lice won't live off of the chickens. We don't have chiggers here, my parents in tennessee do so I know what those are. UGH. SIGH. Thanks again.
 
Check with a local plant nursery or your county extension office--they will know what bugs are in your area and can likely name the specific one and best treatment based upon your description.
 
One thing to think about would be after treatment, there will be a large number of dead insects about the yard, as the insecticide will kill everything, harmful or harmless. If your chooks eat the dead insects, will they get poisoned by the insecticide in the insect?

I would try and identify the bugs first, before destroying them as they might be a seasonal outbreak that is harmless and will pass.
