How long are eggs "safe" to eat

So a little debate in the house. If I forget to collect eggs one day and collect them the next are they good? How long can they sit unrefrigerated before they should just be tossed? Thank you all in advance!!
 
Yes and at least a month.

Test them. Place egg in bowl of tepid water. If it sinks it's good. If it floats it's not.

In Europe, eggs are not refrigerated, they are sold in stores off the shelf like canned goods.

Mother Earth News did an involved series of tests to answer this, a few years ago, but it is on their website. Easy to Google it and check it out.
 
Do a quick search and there will be loads of threads asking the same question. I keep mine in a basket in the kitchen counter. They boil better-easier to peal. and they are already at room temp for baking. I do not let them linger there for long. But a week has not been a problem for me.
If it is hot, and they are fertilized, or a broody is sitting on them...a day make a difference if you do not like liking at the rings, but otherwise... don't worry.
I have not poisoned anyone here yet. Apparently the UK and Australia do not even have their eggs refrigerated in the stores.
However, to paraphrase what one person wrote, 'if it makes you feel uncomfortable toss them.'
If you were starving it would be a different argument.
 
You can tell the date a store bought egg was collected very easily (presumably within a day or two of when in was laid.) Number the days of the year from 1-365, so July 1st is around 180. It's the end of the figures on the end of the carton, on the line that does not have the "expiration date", which will be a month and day, of course. Interesting to learn how old ones' store bought eggs are.
 
hi, i live in the uk and no, eggs arnt put in a fridge in the stores, and i read somewhere that eggs arnt meant to be refridgerated, although i always keep them in the fridge, as do most people i think, as long as you dont wash them they are ok for many weeks as they have a sort of coating on them , ( i read that bit on these forums )

Thank you all for the good info! I was wondering, although if I suspected I had a bad egg, i would certainly put it into my composter, not throw it away.
