wild bird food as a treat?

Most birdseed's a wash nutritionally.. lots of millet and some sunflower seed. But if you find the kind with peanuts, raisins, oats, flax, sunflower seeds, etc, that's different.

I have a 50# bag I got at the local feed mill. I fill the 2 1 quart feeders I used for the girls when they were babies. Feeding frenzy!!

Also, you can find big sunflower heads on the farmer's markets now, or maybe the ones in your garden are ripe. Huge lot of fun for the girls, suspended so they have to jump a bit to reach the seeds!

Nah... it's a treat they only get occasionally. They don't have a run, unless you count the 1/3 acre fenced in backyard a run. They free range.

Chickens "dangerous"? ummm.. they're only 4# birds! I'm not worried about a dozen hens moving around my feet

I don't have roosters, all their wings are clipped, and if I reach down they do the submissive mating squat.

Our chickens are spoiled.

The get a double handful of the following mixture mixed with their Flock Raiser everyday

1. shelled wild bird mixture (all kind of raw, shelled nuts...pistachios, pecans, almonds, sunflower, safflower...etc)
2. BOSS
3. Manna Pro showbird conditioner
4. Calf Manna

We mix these in equal parts. It has really helped their moulting and egg laying since we started it about 4 weeks ago.
