The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I agree with you. Maybe we should come up with a new name for the pure Rhode Island Reds. Call them standard, heritage or whatever you want. This really confuses people such as my self when I first tried to get pure RIR's. I did go to the American Poultry Association Standard of perfection. Many people call their birds heritage and they are not. I will continue to call my pure Rhode Island Reds as Heritage. Bob Blosl (RIP) who started this thread thought the same way and wanted to get people excited about pure Rhode island Reds so he named this thread "The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site" not the Standard Rhode Island Red Site. I do show my birds at poultry shows and proud of them and have gotten champions with some of them. I learned a lot from a person I think a lot of and that is Matt Ulrich who is now the president of the Rhode Island Red Club of America. Several years ago I met him at a show. I did get some birds from him as I was not as happy with my pure RIR's I got from another breeder (from the same line). They were all fine birds but I liked Matt's better. Again good luck and have fun...

Sure thing!

This is them all together.

I think they could be heritage. Here are a few pictures of mine when they were slightly more feathered out than yours.

I think he is very handsome.

I like him better than my Dexter. This is Dexter when he was about the same age. I think Dexter was almost 7 months old in this picture.

Production Reds are certainly not the same as Heritage.
Naturally, I agree. However, a great deal of the world considers Production Reds and hatchery Rhode Island Reds (which, I actually call production Reds too) to be heritage Reds. Therefore, the only way to truly be safe from getting screwed over from the liars, uneducated, or those many good natured folk whom simply use other terminology, is to take the term Heritage lightly… and I mean very lightly.

Anyway, I would wait to see how your chicks grow. I do not see anything alarming in them, and wouldn’t judge them so quickly. They do not look exactly like my chicks (I have Mohawks), but variation in down color does exist within the different bloodlines.

It does get confusing! Even, if we did give it another name, I think people would still advertise their fowl incorrectly. All we can do is educate ourselves and look for good and trusted breeders.

It is great to hear that your birds are doing well at the shows! Hope the RIW are getting some recognition! Have you noticed more breeders getting involved?

I am trying to bring more attention to the Rhode Island Whites. I exchanged eggs with Rob Newburn from Idaho. He created a facebook page too, to help get the breed more recognized. I do show my birds at poultry shows and am the only one showing Rhode Island Whites at the shows I have shown them at.

This is Lucky and his father Shemp. One of the grow out pens.

Shemp Shemp had an encounter with an owl. This was taken after he had healed.
