Chicken Snake!!!!

Well it happened. I walked out to coop Friday evening. I opened the first door and there lay a 5 1/2 foot snake. It was on its way to the hen house. I removed him. I noticed that my little pullets were all upset, they are in a brooder about 4 foot off the ground. I think he had tried to get in there, too big to go through the chicken wire. But he did get ahold of two. One, had a hurt wing, but appeared to be ok. The other did not appear to be hurt other than she holds her head off or nearly upside down. I am going to give her a day more or so, then put her down. She seems ok, when you hold her she is fine, doesn't seem to be hurting. She just looks strange. Any ideas? Oh, well I guess the bad comes with the good, there is one less snake to bother my hens/eggs though.
 
Oh, my. I had not really thought much about the snake aspect of having chickens. I can't deal with snakes. Is there anything you can do to keep down snakes. I would just die no matter what kind of snake it was. I don't do snakes. My DH does not either!!! Hope your pullets are ok.

Must be the weather here. I was talking to a guy I teach with, he has some chickens too. He caught one about 5 feet Friday too. Oh, yes, if you have chickens they will come.
 
Hi there, well I live in snake alley LOL ! Oh yes they are out as thick as fleas here.
I hate to hear about the ones getting hurt. Maybe try & give some Vitiamin& electrolyte water & seperate it. Maybe that'll perk it up,could be stressed out or something.
I think somewhere reading that sulfur sprinkled around the perimeter of your chicken yard.Maybe someone else can give ya somemore info on that.

Do you just get the sulphur from the feed store? Is there a certain kind or anything. thanks. I have goats so maybe that is why I hve not had much of a problem so far. But these chickens will probably bring everything out of the woodwork!

You can get sulphur at feed stores or a hardware store. It can be spread in a spreader just like fertilizer. Unless you have a mild winter it only needs to be done around spring to work all the way through fall. It will smell funny for awhile but it goes away.
