We like to make ours so one can access the eggs without going in the coop.

Rubbermaid Totes with handles that lock the lid on...lid forms the front of nest box. The back is outside access, with doors formed from the piece cut out of the bottom of the tote and scraps of tongue in groove lumber. Easy to clean out, easy to maintain, nice and roomy for my big ol' chickens, keeps bedding in well.
I'm using these old baskets I had laying around from work. Making them right now actually.
I just used a five gallon bucket and put it on it's side and that seems to work. It is in my temporary coop

Here are our two new nest boxes. We installed them yesterday and the Girls have adapted well so far even if they do give us strange looks when we come in to feed.

Awwww man!!! I passed two thrown-away toilets on the way home!!

Will you hose these out or just change the straw? Are they heavy?
