Can I use a metal roof with nothing under it for our coop?

Where do you get the foam insulation to put on the metal roofing? Do you spray it on or paint it on? I also get condensation on the underside of the metal roofing--is the foam insulation the best thing to use?

If you're getting condensation on the underside of a metal roof in Alabama, chances are pretty good it's not so much a mild-lack-of-insulation problem as a *significant*-insufficiency-of-ventilation problem. You don't generally get the UNAVOIDABLE kind of condensation unless there is a considerable temperature difference inside vs outside the coop, like 20-30F or more, which you usually only get in the North (or if you're doing something really excessive with heat lamps

). Try more ventilation before worrying about insulating.

Rigid foamboard is a pretty good insulation to use under metal roofing, except perhaps in super-hot-summer climates (tho frankly there I'm not sure *anything* will last real long). Prop it up on furring strips, or use an ok-for-foam adhesive to glue it to the underside of the roof tin, or any of various other arrangments. For borderline situations, where you don't have too awful much of a condensation problem, just plywood can sometimes be enough (creating a dead air space, isolated from the damp air of the coop, between roofing and plywood).

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Your metal roofing looks a lot like the metal awning over our back patio. When we had a big snow it started to buckle and we had to race out on ladders to get the snow off. However, ours is not reinforced on the underside by 2 X 4s like yours is, so that may not be an issue. I have a metal roof on my coop and run, but it is laid over plywood and roofing paper. Also, the screw holes are well caulked.
