what's the deal with chickens and avocados?

I live in an Avocado orchard. We cannot possibly collect all the avocados that fall - Therefore, all the animals, wild or pets, eat avocados. Our oldest dog was weaned on avocados, and she lived to be 17 years old. The rats eat them, tree squirrels eat them, the opossums eat them, even the American Robins eat them. The robins just swarm when the winds knock off and damage avocados that have not reached maturity. There are no dead animals in our orchard (and I would love it if the rats died). All the vets say don't feed animals avocados, but our experience defies their advice.

We have 2 mo old chicks
Fed avocado in skin yesterday & today
Have two dead birds today
Won't ever feed them avocado again
Maybe worse for younger chickens?

I have had a very sick chicken for the last 3 days. She's so sick with diarrhea, I found a half eaten avocado pit in their outside area today, it wasn't one of ours, maybe one of our neighbors put it there. Is there a treatment????? I feel she doesn't have long left!!

My chickens have gotten to an avocado or two that feel from the tree before I did and have been ok. I think I read that the pits and peels seem to be heats worse. @Qualara I don't know what to tell you aside from plain pedia lite. My chicks weren't a fan of the flavored.

I failed to check before feeding and just found two (Out of 4 hens total) of my favorite hens dead in the coop from avocado. I am so upset with myself for not checking into this before now….

Do you remember if they ate any of the skin or pit?

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to share in my experience, avocados are typically never the cause of death or illness in poultry. I was raised on an avocado ranch, family business. There are many benefits and the seed is actually a cancer killer, that is why it routinely is mislabeled. Not saying to make a batch of guacamole for the chickens but an occasional fruit here and there is beneficial. Here is another link talking about modern misconceptions in poultry husbandry http://www.communitychickens.com/top-5-myths-and-facts-about-treats-for-chickens/

Thanks for sharing! Where did you grow up? I am in SoCal. I am obsessed with growing avocados and raising chickens, lol.
