Mine get some of my leftover oatmeal from breakfast in their morning treat - apple peels, dampened laying mash, kitchen scraps. I think what warms them up is sitting their cold, wet, poopy feet in my lap while eating it.

I give my 10 hens warm water oatmeal with bananas 3-4 times atI've noticed that a lot of people say they give their chickens oatmeal to help them stay warm during the cold months. How does this work exactly? Are people thinking that eating warm food somehow has a lingering effect on body temperature? Or does it have to do with providing extra calories in order to help them fatten up? I'm confused!

Welcome to BYC.I give my 10 hens warm water oatmeal with bananas 3-4 times a
week, during sub 32° weather. Sometimes with a tablespoon of
honey. So far, I get 8-10 eggs every day. I've noticed a slight
weight gain, but that's due in part to inactivity outdoors. I've read
the pros and cons, and I'm satisfied with my feeding regimen.
