I've got an australorp too, but she's super sweet and very friendly. Silkies are ok, I suppose, but in the brain department you'd be looking at all fluff...literally!

Yes, I have given mine a state standardized test, problem is, they keep using the pencils as perches.

I like this old thread and would like to continu it.:
Ik have Dutch Bantams (DB) and I think they are very smart when compared to the Wyandottes I know from a neighbor and the hybrids we used to have at my parents house.

The DB are alert when they are outside the coop. They are enthusiastic diggers for small wildlife (insects). They respond to me, are very curious, go to the coop if it is getting dark, etc.... The one thing that they do not understand is that it is silly to go broody on infertile eggs.

Furthermore I have a question of another difference in smartness - in raising chicks:
Are chickens born from natural breed smarter (because of their education) then chickens who come from an incubator and are raised separate from the flock? The latter have only their instinct to go on. Anyone any experience on both natural and incubator chickens of the same breed/family? Is there a difference in smartness?
