it has now been 6 and a half hrs and she is still wet and only takes couple steps here and there.... getting a little worried, she keeps laying on the wet sponge that is in there and i am thinking she will never dry!! or really start movin! humidity is at 65% and temp is 100.0... also a tiny piece of bloody, stringy looking stuff is still hanging out naval... is this ok?? it is a very tiny piece but it is def there... any advice would help! thank you!

My first just hatched last weekend. Everything I had read indicated they were "dry and fluffy" within "about an hour", and that they'd be up racing around the incubator in about that time too, so that's what I was expecting. Well, 12 hours after hatch, mine still looked wet and were still staggering around like drunken sailors. DH pointed out that with the high humidity, it would be hard for them to dry. After the first 3 were a day old, but the fourth had not yet pipped, I whisked them out of the incubator and put them in the brooder where the heat lamp was already set up. Even then it was several hours before they were really dry and fluffy, and another day before they had got the hang of balance. Now they are 5 days old and are as steady on their feet as can be, zipping around all over the place.

thank you! now was that because they would not dry?? does anyone know the exact reason for keeping them in incubator for 24 hrs?? what if i quickly took her out now and put her in the brooder? it has been 8 hrs since hatch...

eeeek
Vince, i'm in the same boat. They are drying a little, but I think they are what is keeping the humidity up. They are like little living sponges! I have 2 out and 3 pipped. I've almost moved them to the brooder the last 6 times i've went in to check them....just a little longer...

I know they can go without food for a couple days, but what about water???

Hey does anyone know how to get chicks dry !? I feel like a bad father!! The black on still isn't dry on her back and the yellow one I just put in there an hour or so ago
