securing chicken wire together

Quote:
In the poultry business, brooders may be stacked on top of each other in a "battery." Or, a battery is a series of cages. A battery hen is housed in one of these small cages with a number of other hens.

A hog ring is like a c-shaped staple that can be clamped like Dawn's J clips. They do come in different sizes. I've used them to clamp wire to plywood for rabbit cages and they are used for heavier woven wire fences. Upholsterers also use hog rings. The original use was as rings in the snouts of pigs to prevent rooting up a pasture or the ground under a fence. Those j clips look more useful for your work but hog rings could also be used.
It is nice today in Idaho, isn't it

!!

Think about insulating your shed by next Fall. If the indoor space "fits" the chickens well, their warm bodies can go a long way towards keeping the coop warm. At the moment, check out the "Raising Baby Chicks" forum here on BYC for the care of your new chicks.

Yup they sleep alot at first....just like babies. They wake, eat, potty and sleep again. They start getting more full of themselves soon enough.

J clips are indeed secure and a great way to hold the chicken wire tight. Good luck with the babies.

Thank you all for the help. I will go to the hardware store and get myself some J-clips. The chick are all still doing great on day 3!

Can anyone tell me if you can connect hardware cloth to hardware cloth with these things? All the pics show them hooking to cages and such. I need to splice some sections together.

Hi and Welcome to BYC!!! /img/smilies/frow.gif

We use J clips to connect our chicken wire and hardware cloth together. We buy our clips from TSC, the Co-Op carries them too...they are used for putting rabbit cages together.

awesome thanks for the pics!

I just got done with building my run late last week. I overlapped about 3-4 inches from the top section to bottom and used heavy duty zip ties to pull the lower and upper section of wire together to make it tight. It works really well. Will the zip ties last 10 years...prolly not but they are so easy to replace so I could care less if they wear out in a few years. If you get some heavy duty ones meant for outdoor use they will last plenty long enough. My run is 32x27 and I used a little over 1 bag of zip ties to pull it all together. Works well in my opinion.
