Using a dog kennel for outdoor run

I just added a kennel to my coop.  I just butted it up to the coop and cut a access hole in the chainlink and stapled it to the door on the coop.  For a top I just got some of the bird netting you put on fruit trees and stretched it over the top of the kennel.  8 dollars at lowes.  It will stop a owl or hawk and keep the girls in.

I'm in the sticks and have coons, fox, skunks, grinners, and all the other critters around not to mention the stray dogs and ferrel cats.  I started the day I built their first coop "marking my territory" around the coop and have never had a problem with preditors.  Just something to think about for a new chicken owner.

It's 2015, just now reading this thread. I like your chain link kennel plan. I'm doing that for my little flock of 5. You said among others you have raccoons in the area. Couldn't they climb up the fence and tear into the bird netting? I lost my first flock and don't want that to happen again. Thank you for the idea of stapling to the coop. I hope you see my comment and write an update to your setup

I use a 10' x10' dog kennel for my chicken run. I laid out 4' wide 1/2" hardware cloth on the ground, under the edge of the kennel, with 1 & 1/2 ' of it wired up the inside of the kennel. The remaining 2 &1/2' laid down on the ground outside the kennel to prevent predator digging underneath. I then wrapped the entire kennel in 1/2" hardware cloth, including the open part of the roof. I attached the kennel to the coop using chain link fence topping pipe and chain link clamps. I overlapped the hardware cloth at the door and wired a 2x6" board as a kicker at the base of the door. This is year #2 and I've had no trouble with predators, including rodents. It's super strong and looks nice.

I also used a 10x 10 dog pen. I wrapped everything with chicken wire and put two courses of deck boards around the bottom perimeter. Then I built a roof over the whole thing covered in metal that I got free from a contractor friend who couldn't use it because it got scratched in shipping. My chicks haven't cared about the scratches. I used hardware cloth to fill the gaps between the roof and the pen to deter "critters". I'll try to go take some pictures later today.

The hardware cloth is a must if you small chicks and chain link fencing. We have a dog run and love it. When I first put up the dog run one chick darted right through the chain link. She looked to big to fit the hole but she went through the chain link like greased lightning! The woods are close by and I knew I had to get the chick or lose a barred rock. I caught the little gal which was a remarkable feat in and of itself. I distracted the 1 month old by tossing my leather glove about a foot on the other side of the chick so she would move towards me. It worked and with fast hands I snagged her before she made it to the woods!
