Hi, I have a chicken that has some yellow stuff on the inside of her mouth and throat. she is still eating, drinking, and laying. It kind of looks like strep throat would in a human. When i did some research the only disease I found with that symptom was fowl wet pox, so if anyone has any advice on what it might be i am looking for suggestions. Shes had it for over a month now, none of the other chickens have any signs of anything at all. Her lungs sound kind of wheezy too. Not all the time but sometimes. I gave them all a round of anti-biotics just in case and swabbed her mouth with warm salt water. I didnt want to do too much since I dont know what it is. What do you guys think? Thanks a bunch~!

It sounds like you're taking some good steps, I'm sorry I can't tell you more than that! It's a little late in the evening now so fewer people may be on here, but hopefully soon someone else can help you out. Until then I'll give you a bump. Good luck, and it sounds like you're taking good care of your chicken!

Aloha, luvs2fish. Chickens are designed in such a way as to make them desperately susceptible to respiratory problems--fungus, thrush-type stuff, viruses, bacteria. As the chicken is still able to eat and get around this is something that is slowly growing. Probably a fungus. If you could get a sample from the mouth to your vet or a university lab and get a diagnosis, you can treat it properly. It isn't going to go away. If she is wheezing that same junk is probably in her lungs by now. An antibiotic is probably in order but I'm not sure which one. If expense is a consideration (and it often is, that is just reality) and you can't afford expensive testing or another vet visit, I would consider putting that bird down. It will eventually effect the others if not treated. And she has to be getting more uncomfortable with each passing day.

Before hitting the wall or spending a fortune you might consider tetracycline hydrochloride (inexpensive soluble powder available at your feed store). It is a wide-spectrum antibiotic and is specific for chronic respiratory infections in chickens. Even a small bag has hundreds of doses. Mix carefully according to directions. You must mix a fresh batch every 24 hours. But it is pretty wonderful stuff. If it works you will know in just a couple days. Best of luck. jeannie mccabe

If it is a fungal infection antibotics will not work may make it worse. You nedd an antifungal. I would take her to the vet if it is fungal they will be able to prescribe an antifungal treatment. I dont know of any antifungals you can buy OTC

I Agree, it sounds like canker (trictomoniasis.) I recommend you treat with metronidazole. You can buy it as Fishzole. Dosage is 250mg per day x 7 days. It is contageous and birds remain carriers. Canker affects the crop and other organs as well.

Well thanks everyone for the responses! You've been a great help! I did a two week round with the powder anti-biotics, it doesnt seem to be making a difference. I want to take her to the vet, but that really isn't an option for me right now. Which I hate to say I sure love my ladies, but I already have a big vet bill from my horse picking up a nail a couple months ago. I've also thought of putting her down, but she is still acting so normal except for the wheezing here and there. But on the other hand I dont want her to suffer either. Well hopefully something comes up, and I will be able to get her to the vet soon. Thanks for all the support. I will let you guys know either way how it goes.
