My ex-father in law used to laugh about the cough medicine his mother would mix up for him and his brothers and sisters. It was so bad, he said, that if they had to cough again, they ran out behind the barn or just silently choked the cough down. And what would that be, you ask? Kerosene and sugar. I cannot imagine swallowing kerosene, even if it was mixed with sugar.

Fast forward to right now. I have a skin cancer and went to the local healer for a black salve application in a bandaid. Both my DH and I have done this before. Cost? $40. Modern medicine cost? $5,000 to $20,000.

Does anyone else use alternative medicine and what do you use?
And what are some "old time" remedies you know about?

My grandmother in the depression era had a sure fire cure for ringworm. She would cook down a little nightshade in lard in the cast iron skillet and apply that to the fungus on the skin. Reportedly it cured with one application.
Several Folks here on this forum swear by the animal medicine "Blue Coat" for various applications.

I was a croupy kid- Mom always gave me a teaspoonful of sugar with straight whiskey poured on it. That and some steam did it!

Warm human urine in the ear for earaches/infections.

Heard about it from a woman that grew up with the kerosene/sugar remedy. She said once she was coughing so hard she took a straight tablespoon of kerosene.
