Toe Amputation on Dog, advise please

I like this idea, unless my 4 Jack Russells decided this was some weird squeaky toy and I find them all hanging from it

I am going to check our local pet supply and see if they carry something like this.

LOL! The one we had was a pretty tough fabric...it "may" survive your Jack Russells...

*speaking of that, i need to see if i can find ours, time to get my pup spayed. sigh. *

Everyone here got fixed last year, fun times...... all did well, except for Gordy .........

does he always chew a lot?? my doberman chewed his legs and feet a ton, we found out he had allergys to Corn, wheat and rice. im wondering if a food allergy is what is causeing the chewing.. or does he just chew when he has stitches in??

I'd be trying to find the underlying cause for the chewing, too. Otherwise, he's likely to keep injuring himself, even if you do get him through the toe amputation successfully. It could be allergies, could be anxiety/habit. If it's the latter, spending money on a good trainer would probably save you on vet bills, in the long run.

Good luck!

He does not chew, he licks and licks and licks and only when he has a "wound" . He initially got a yeast infection, which can happen in dogs with longer hair on their feet. So I learned to keep the hair clipped short around his toes. The yeast infection itched (trust I personally have had one and they itch like heck! ) so he chewed his toe. I treated it with a yeast infection medicine, but by then he was licking it and the medicine would not stay on, infection got worse and here we are. My JRT's do have food allergies, so all my dogs are on Grain Free , two of the 4 JRT's also have Flea Allergies, everyone is on Comfortis.

This might be a late reply, but we had to have a toe amputated on our rescued mastador (mastiff + lab). She had pulled the nail stepping in a hole and our previous vet poo-poo'ed the injury, than a year later we find she also developed a bone infection and had broken the first joint. We switched vets because the foot had become an obvious discomfort to her.

We also had to go back once to get restitched as well. The second time we triple wrapped the foot, and taped it well with medical adhesive tape. I sat with her solid for a couple hours, and every time she went for it, I gave her a solid "NO! Bad Dog!" and she left it alone after that. It took a long time of sitting with her, however.

If I can't get anything else to work, I will do this but I really hate to

Imagine if you HAD done it the first time around? Best suggestion of all. He will get used to it quickly.

I have not had the amputation done, my truck broke and I had to have it fixed. Consulted with the vet on waiting a couple of weeks. I think I have made the right decision, the antibiotics appear to be doing better than expected and it is healing. Skin is pink , no smell and almost half of it is growing new skin! I will be taking him in for a check up this week, but crossing my fingers that the antibiotics have done what they should and we can avoid any surgery.
