serama leg color...

Gumbii,
Opinions aside, yellow is the correct leg color as far as the standard. I don't recall reading any real drama over it at the SCNA. It's pretty simple, yellow is correct, swarthy is accepted for black. I'm not sure about blue. I need to read it again but I don't think that every Serama color has a "correct" leg color at this time, heck, I can't count that high anyway,

They had to pick a color for the standard and for white, that is obviously yellow. Can you imagine how bland white legs on a white bird would be? And Serama's can be called a lot of things but bland is not one of them,

The next color to be accepted may be black since a good number of breeders have chosen to work on it. Yellow legs on a black Serama are certainly not impossible.....there were some shown on the SCNA forum just to show everyone it can be done and it's a very vibrant with black. Swarthy is just a layer of black in the skin over the top of yellow so it may take some work but the swarthy legs it can slowly be bred out to leave only the yellow that was already there to start with.

Green legs are the same, yellow underneath with a dermal layer of green over the yellow. It's supposedly more difficult to breed the green out and it's not considered correct but in the end, you breed what you like, green legs, white legs, black legs....it's only for the standard or show that the yellow is required. I wasn't real happy with the pullets I had with green legs so I sold them cheap to someone who liked them but that person really liked them.

The odd thing is that I really love green and willow on my Araucana's except for my white ones. Willow legs are standard with some of the feather colors and I raised one pullet that was splash colored that had the greenest leg's I've ever seen, green grass green. It was so cool. But with my Serama's, I want yellow. The darker, brighter and more vivid the better. The cleanest deep, dark yellow possible. I love that with those expressive, vibrant colors that the Serama can come in. They look exotic, flashy, eye catching, just as an exhibition bird should be. If you walked through a building full of poultry breeds and there are all sorts of breeds in the rows, do you want people who have never seen a Serama to say, hum, cute lil guy? or WOWOW! Look at THOSE! I want one of those, and one of these and two of that color! They may not be big in size but I think they are huge in personality, style and colorzzzzzzz of all kinds. Each one is like a jewel and I want all my jewels to just glow with vibrant color.

Cathy - Since the breed has been accepted by the ABA the leg color is set at yellow or swarthy for all varieties of American Serama.

You are correct that green legs are the hardest to breed out as they are recessive to yellow.

I am sure it will be altered based on variety as it moves forward it is very very difficult to get a yelow leg on Black and Blue Birds. Not impossible but very hard. the other thing to keep in mind teh more OE that are brought in to the Serama to stabilize color the less you will see the yellow leg as there are no yellow legs in OE.
I expect as time passes and more varieties are proposed for acceptance beyond white then you will see the leg color changes based on variety as we have with other multi variety breeds.

The Standard for the other varieties will read Yellow or Yellow preferred, swarthy allowed.

Wyandottes, Rocks and Leghorns all have yellow legged birds in Black and Blue.
