James Island SC (Charleston County) regs?

Hi all,

I'd like to have a 3-4 hen coop on James Island SC, but can't find the exact regulations so I was wondering if anyone on BYC had experience or knew the ordinance for Charleston SC county? The town of James Island prohibited chickens, but since that is know defunct those rules no longer apply. I also found that the City of Charleston permits them as long as they are 150 feet away from neighbor's homes, unless the neighbor provides written authorization. My property is about 3/4 acre, but I doubt anywhere on the property would be 150 feet from all neighbors. Does anyone here have experience on James Island?

The county ordinance appears to be no regulation on numbers, just written consent from anyone within 150 feet. I haven't talked to the actual town of James Island (if you are not city).


Sec. 5.9 - Keeping swine and poultry prohibited. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or maintain any hogs, pigs or poultry within the corporate limits of the city except at a distance more than one hundred fifty (150) feet from any dwelling, other than the dwelling of the person so keeping such animals, unless written permission is obtained from the residents and owners of the dwelling within one hundred fifty (150) feet of where such animals are to be housed or maintained, and under such conditions as are approved by either the health officer, the public safety and housing officer or the division of animal control relating to the appropriate care and security of the animals.

I talked to someone at the Town of James Island this morning, so if you are not zoned city, this applies. http://www.jamesislandsc.us/

James Island has no rules against having chickens. They will respond to complaints though:
- feed on the ground has made it a harborage for rodents, and this is a health concern.
- noise ordinance (I think it would have to be a lot of chickens to get a valid complaint).
- smell, if you had a ton of chickens and the smell was bothering folks.
- selling eggs from your house without a permit (something to this effect at least).

They are super nice at the office, so if you need to check this information in the future, I would call them up.
 
we have 3 guinea in riverland terrace. many of our neighbors love them, but apparently there are 2 houses who hate them. had a posting from the police today that one was outside our yard. i wouldn't care if someone asked us to get rid of them, but don't call the cops without talking to us first. some people are animal loves, and some have rocks of stone
