what types of plants to grow for my chickens?

Chickweed, collards, comfrey, roses (hips), grapes, tomatoes, cantaloupe, squash, cucumbers, Brussels sprouts, chard, turnips, beets, okra, marshmallow, beans, and carrots. There are a lot of great things to plant for them.

Mine were so fat and happy eating all of the fallen pears, apples, peaches, plums--etc. from our orchard. Man, I didn't buy them food at all. Spring and summer, please hurry!!!!!!

You really need to plan ahead for winter planting but something we try to plant for our chickens is "cover crop wheat". Basicly it's just common wheat that's used by farmers and gardeners to prevent erosion in fields and gardens. It's also the wheat raised for straw. It grows and stays green all winter when other grasses have gone dormant.

We till up some small patches maybe 4'x12' and plant the wheat in September to get a good start before frost place heavy wire shelf racks over it to keep the girls from digging it out. Then when everything else has turned brown after it freezes we remove a rack or to and allow the girls access to some of the wheat. You can rotate the areas they have available to keep it from being torn up completely and it will last all winter. Then in the spring when grass is growing till it under and plant summer greens for them.

Pea vines.... I planted some snow peas this last fall but got them in too late to really get much in the way of peas, but the vines did great. So I would pull up a handful of vine every so often for the girls. They were on it like white on rice!

I have a bunch of beautyberry bushes all over the property. The chooks love to eat the berries and the turkeys are tall enough to eat them right off the bush. They eat them all summer long. There are also wild blackberries all over the place. I planted mulberries last year. I also planted the red tea hibiscus last year and the chickens decided they love the red flower calyxes so out of 2 6ft plants I haven't been able to harvest any for tea lol.

Blueberries are my favorite treat besides watermelon. They walk up to the plant and hop/flap up to the top of the bush to grab the blueberries. It is so fun and entertaining.
