We had 3 eggs hatch over the weekend and 2 of the 3 chicks are not walking. One leg seems to have movement but is unable to draw it up underneath them. It's odd, because one was walking and then stopped. They chirp constantly because when momma moves they have a hard time getting to her. It seems like a tendon deformation in the knee joint. Im at a loss of what to do. I make sure they eat & drink, but am I prolonging the inevitable?!

A little background info, this is the 3rd time this hen has been broody since this summer (she turned 1 in July) all previous chicks have had no problems. I was shocked she was broody so late in the season and kept an eye on her but really had no idea how long she'd been setting. So last week I checked the eggs, candled them and 2 were not as warm as the other one. I brought the hen & eggs in the house and to my surprise, Saturday one hatched, one started pipping, and one you could hear random taps. By Sunday all were hatched. When #2 wasn't walking and had the "bum "leg, I got concerned and even put him on his back to make sure he had movement (he moves it fine) and thought maybe he just needed time. Nothing's changed.

Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

(PS - we live in Ohio, it's gotten down to 29 at night)

Are they on a smooth or slick surface? Chicks should be on a towell or something they can grip not newspaper or cardboard etc... they will developed spraddle legged chick syndrome. If they do they could die if left untreated. To treat get a bandaid wrap each end around each leg with the pad being in between legs leaving enough room to walk but not to let the leg slide out. We had this happen and one died before we figured it out. There are pictures online step by step how to wrap the little legs. It worked for us. Good luck. Google spraddle legged chick syndrome and you should find pictures and symptoms.

Thanks so much! I have newspaper down and even put some sand paper down for grip, but maybe too late. I am googling the remedy now and getting the band-aid box! Wish me luck! I love this forum, everytime we have a chicken issue this place ALWAYS helps!

Good luck!! I'm sure it will be fine. The ones I did it to made it just fine after I got the bandaid on. I hope its nothing more serious. If its spraddle legs I'm sure they will be just fine. They weren't happy but they are grown now and are big healthy girls. This may be a little more difficult with a silkies feathered legs and when its time to come off in a couple weeks you may have to lube the bandaid some to keep it from pulling feathers out. It took 2 of us to do one of my chicks that was especially fiesty ..lol
