Hi, was wondering if someone would be able to give me some advice.
I have 4 ex battery hens which we got in september. This morning i went to let the hens out and noticed one stayed up in the nesting box (they havent totally got the hang of sleeping on the perches). A few hours later i noticed she still hadnt come down and when i went to see her she seemed alot quiet then usual and not too well. I took her into the house to have a proper look at her and she appeared to be passing bits of egg but no shell in sight. She had a very mucky bottom too.
I have bathed her in warm water and checked inside the vent (after reading it may possibly be a broken egg) but i couldnt feel any evidence of shell.
She has remained the same all day, only occasionally venturing out of the nexting box to get a drink. I brought her back in and put her in front of the heater and she passed a bit more egg then seemed to perk up a little. She still doesnt seem too well though and remains very cuddly!
She has drank plenty today but seems off her food too. Im new to chickens and dont really know where to go from here? Iv put her back in the box with the other girls to allow her to sleep as she seems very tired but i dont know im doing the right thing.

Please help if anyone can?

If it were me I would give heat lamp and start antibiotics asap. Push fluids, I would force a teaspoon about every half hour for next 2.5 hours, unless shes doing it on her own. fruit may also help pass things through. adding calcium may help prevent it, mine love egg shells some people wash them before giving to prevent birds from eating own eggs. Older or new egg layers often will lay soft shell eggs. Poor baby, you have done good so far, keep babying her, sounds like you rescued her. Possibly not the best breeding either, like poorly bred dogs they can exhibit problems, Im just guessing, my imagination gets away from me when it comes to these things. I hope she does well, these things can be heart breaking.

Thankyou for the info, i really appreciate it!

Hopefully by the morning will get a better idea of how shes doing and will keep pushing fluids.

Unfortunately my little lady didnt make it. She was warm and comfortable when she passed and went easily in her sleep.

She probably had peritonitis, which I've read is caused by the egg breaking inside. My hen Tulip is going through that right now. A soft shelled egg broke inside her. I'm giving her Duramycin 10, which I read is good for this condition. I also called my vet to fill some Metacam for fever. My vet doesn't treat chickens but was willing to fill two syringes based on her weight. She was very feverish and extremely lethargic. The pain med seems to have perked her up some, so hopefully she'll start eating and drinking on her own soon. Hopefully she'll survive. I'll update if she lives so you'll know to try this next time. I guess it's pretty common in production birds.
