Houston, TX: Let's Change the Chicken Laws and Ordinances in COH

I realize that this thread is a little old but I need some advice.

We have had chickens at our house for over a year now but recently our neighbors who are trying to sell their house put in a complaint to the city about our chickens. We have no roosters and our chickens are quiet.

We are looking into getting a medical permit for these chickens but are wondering about what medical conditions exactly qualify for the permit? My husband has severe chronic allergies and asthma and we were hoping that his doctor might sign a letter stating that fresh eggs would be best for him.

But even more puzzling is where do we go to get this permit and how much does it cost? I can't seem to figure this out at all. Anyone know? I was thinking that it might be the BARC on the north side but I don't know.

Just a followup. I have been on and off the phone with Animal Control all weekend. I found out that there is no longer a permit required inside Houston city limits for chickens. The only restrictions are that the chickens have to be completely confined (so that they can not roam at-large) and they have to be kept more than 100 feet from the next closest residential building (house). Roosters are not allowed. I was told that there is not limit on the number of chickens you can have as long as their conditions can't be deemed "cruel" by Animal Control.

So now all I have to worry about is the Housing Association.

I'm in the very center of Houston with five chickens and it hasn't been an issue for the last five months... I'm hoping that will stay true. They're all hens and are very quiet and they get to free range through the backyard and return to the cool at night. I measure the other day, and I was alarmed to realize that our coop is only 70ft away from the closest neighbors

When I first started researching I was disheartened to see that Hens for Houston was no longer in action. Does anyone know if there are any other movements to change the ordinances? I don't think it will be an issue for me, but I would love for others to have chickens as well.

I'm in Houston and I have chickens. I have great relationships with my neighbors on both sides which I think is key. The HOA rules are a little vague in that they forbid livestock but allow household pets, which is what we consider the chickens. It could be argued either way and a litigious hoa could make fighting for them expensive. We've had them for nearly 3 years now though so I don't think there will be any problem, at least with our current neighbors.

I have a small flock w a roo; live close in butbon a half acre lot so not a problem to have the coop 100 feet from others. No problems here, but I'd like to see a Houston chicken owners group so we can compare notes on flock behavior and health, coops (who builds them or best place to buy one, etc.).

My backyard is only 17 feet from the fence to my back door. My issue is my back neighbor decided to plant bamboo, I have the dam thing growing all the way to 7 feet in my backyard.

I have call the HOA and nothing, supposedly they can't do anything. So, what is so wrong in having chickens.?

How about if all the people here we get together and start doing something about that stupid ordinance. City of Belaire has chance those 100 ft to 20!

Can we start getting into meeting or something.?

I'm in the Webster area, perhaps we could form small group by are, do Skype conference or something! The power is of the people! But if we do not protest, nothing will ever chance.

Interesting info here. I am not in Houston , but i am in Harris County. We are starting up a small family farm setup and breeding chickens and i started doing some searching around to see if i was going to end up with issues with the county over the roosters. We live in an unrestricted part of the county , and have plenty of land to be far enough from neighbors for it to hopefully not be an issue.
