My boxes are built on an interior shelf, with outside access doors, and are topped with an additional storage area for misc crap.
I briefly considered external boxes but they're far trickier to build and are less structurally sound (than interior shelves attached directly to studs). The coop area is also a pretty high traffic corner of the yard...somebody'd inevitably run into it such a massive protruberance! I'd rather use up interior space above where the chickens waddle about. Plus the bonus interior storage space is nice (dusty as all hell...but dry!).
I go inside as little as possible...don't always have a pair of 'poo-shoes' on when I need em...
