I've got a garage door gap too. I know we've had mice in our garage but I figure they would give the chickens something to play football with if they can catch it. I'm not aware of rats out here at all, and we have yet to see a snake close to the house. I'm going to stuff the spots I can with bricks and we'll see how it goes. I figure if my cats are afraid of the chicks they're probably big enough to handle any garage wildlife we get.

Mama to a whole bunch of birds. An unknown # of chicks, 10 EE, 1 RIR, 1 BR, 2 SLW, 3 silkies, 1 Cuckoo Maran, 2 blue cochin, 4 turkens, 2 doms, 6 barnyard babies, 4? black broiler sweeties I can't eat, and 3 embden geese. (36 chickens, 3 geese)

lol I saw my chicks attacking a cranefly that got into the brooder last night. It was REALLY funny seeing them chirping their heads of like "ITS MINE!!!!" and lunging all over the place at the darn thing. Finally one Phoenix... whose the loud aggressive bugger btw flew up and got it.

Update: March 3rd.. First batch of chickens are now what...3 weeks old? They are still rather in their fugly phase and look like pin cushions gone wrong. But being that they are growing SO fast hubby and I decided that they had to be in a bigger area than the brooder we had set up but the barn is still too cold and drafty. So we built... GIGANTIC BROODER! ;) yes. I know... its bigger than my dorm room ;)

Darling Hubby helped me get the gigantic brooder together: No hes not really tiny.. it really IS that big. roll.png

Is it just me or does my heat lamp look like something out of Jurassic Park?

So much SPACE! What do we do?! ... ummm... Hide in a corner?

IMG_6130.jpg

See how much we have grown!

IMG_6132.jpg

Note the two white ones in the back. They have up till now always been identical... just two different sizes. So we call them Itty and Bitty. (Itty of course being the little one)

STRIKE THE POSE! *VOGUE*  ;)  I hope this is a girl. I REALLY like this one. Its the only one who LIKES to be held... there are others that tolerate being petted... but this one will just sit on my hand or knee and be calm and relaxed. what breed do you think?

The replacement chicks have arrived!  I ordered 16 but recived 26. 1 extra Egyptian Fayoumis male (*may* be spoken for). The other 9 were red star males. Those boys are now down at the feed store. The feed store (not TS... Im rather fed up with them at this point) was happy to get them as they had long since run out of chicks. I didnt ask for anything for them because I was honistly just happy that I woudlnt have a bunch of roos that I didnt want to have to deal with.

I orgianly had 16 die from my first order back in Feb. I asked for credit for them and then applied the credit to diffrent birds. I didnt want them to reship bantams as the first order was disasterious. So this is what I got. Some of these will be up for sale ;) So if your near Dallas Texas and are intrested let me know.

GOLDEN CAMPINES Females     1
BARRED ROCK Females     1
PHOENIX Males     1  *rehome*

WELCOME TO CLUB YOKE!

My hubby and I picked 'gold palomino' and 'egg shell' *snickers* for the inside of the coup... only when we were well on our way to being done with the first layer of painting did it dawn on us what it looked like... the inside of an egg. And thus... Club Yoke was born!

Its still a work in progress.. but it already looks SO much better! Will be replacing the entire ground substrate and putting a thick layer or river sand inside and outside will be a layer of gravel, THEN a layer or river sand and new side walls. But we are going to be doubling the size of the hen house and tripiling the size of the run.
