Into the fray with Four New Baby Chicks!!! [PICS]

My wife and I had been talking about getting chickens for a few months now, and the local feed stores in our area have started selling. We went yesterday to "browse" and ended up coming home with four beautiful chicks!
The feed store had several breeds (I had been partial to getting some Buff Orpingtons, but my wife insisted we get some of the barred rocks as well :p) All female, and about a week and a half old. This being our first go around with chickens we are so excited and are constantly watching them explore their brooder and each other.



Buying materials to start building the coop this week! Any suggestions on tasty treats to give the little ones? I don't want to spoil em, but I want to give them a lil something special :p

what breeds did you pick?

I have been treating my new chicks with "Farmers' Helper UltraKibble for Chicks" (mixed in their starter feed), and also "Farmers' Helper BabyCake for Chicks" (a couple hours a day per the bags instructions). This morning I am treating them to some hard boiled egg yolk (just the yolk). We tried some of the freeze dried meal worms, too, but only one of the chicks was interested, so far.

We ended up with two Buff Orpingtons and two Barred Rock, all pullets. Somehow, after originally only deciding to start with two to three we ended up with four. :p

I may try a little of the hard boiled egg yolk this week. Thanks!
 
Congratulations on your first chicks! Hopefully the first of many... ; )

Mine loved green grass, boiled and scrambled eggs chopped up real fine. Mine also liked "warm mash" as I like to call it. Get a lid from a jar, or some other small 'bowl', put a hand full of chick starter in it and add just a wee bit of warm water. Make it where it's mushy, my chicks had a blast gobbling it up.

Congrats on your new chicks! They're so cute! My chicks had smushed green beans (no salt added) for breakfast this morning. I've also given them warm oatmeal, boiled/scrambled eggs, apple sauce, yogurt with some spinach mixed in......but my chickies are a little older than yours ;) good luck with them!
 
FYI.....once you start with the treats, if they aren't water soluble like the starter feed or the egg yolk, they are going to need chick grit to help them digest :) You can find chick grit at most feed stores!

Enjoy your babies, they grow up way too fast!!!
 
Congrats on your peeps! They'll like just about anything...at least mine all did. Cooked rice, shredded cheese, scrambled or boiled eggs, grass, bugs, veggies, applesauce and yogurt. Do give them some chick grit, and...dig up a big hunk of sod with grass and dirt in it and put it in with them They'll love it.
 
We started with orpingtons and barred rocks and they did great. As for the treats, I personally don't see any need to feed them anything other than chick starter. If you want to feed the treats, it's really more for you in terms of the fun factor than it is for the chicks.
