Hatching store bought eggs~ Whole Foods vs. Trader Joes

I'm planning on buying eggs from one or both these stores to put in with my own eggs for the Easter egg hatch.

 

I've read lots of threads about people hatching fertile TJ eggs and WF eggs. I don't really want the white leghorns from TJ's, but I know that Whole foods sells fertile brown eggs. People report better hatches with Trader Joes eggs. Does trader joes sell fertile brown eggs, if so....what breed? Anybody who has hatched the brown Whole Foods eggs, what breed did they turn out to be? Any tips.... info? Thanks jumpy.gif

Hi CHckeneer!  

 

I haven't hatched the TJ eggs--but I sure have thought about it!!  If you don't get much of a response here, perhaps asking on the TJ thread will net an answer. The thread isn't limited to just TJ so perhaps there is an answer there.

Well, Im so glad fertile eggs at both those stores are cheap smile.png like paying for regular eating eggs,unlike if I was to buy from a breeder......$$$ it would be a whole different story hide.gif.

Anyways, saw your name on the easter egg hatch along list......maybe u want to put some TJ or WF eggs in the bator with me?jumpy.gif It would be nice to have someone else hatching some store eggs too lol.

I hatched 4 white leghorn chicks from Trader Joes.

 

Whole Foods Brown Fertile Eggs: Zip. None of them even started

Really, not one Whole Foods eggs hatched? That must have been hard.......Anyways, I read that the fertile eggs at Whole foods are from like Chino valley or something like that, and those people that bought them did hatch a few......was yours the same brand?

I've hatched four White Leghorns from TJ's eggs.  I was planning on trying some Whole Foods or other "fertile" grocery store eggs for the Easter Hatch this year.  Maybe a dozen more TJ eggs and a dozen brown "fertile" eggs.  Along with some others, of course....

 

Trader Joe's ONLY carries the white fertile eggs.

they didn't just not hatch. They never even started. I think their idea of "fertile eggs" is like the "free range" label. They probably were within the radius of a rooster but doesn't mean that they ever mated.

 

They were the "Whole Foods" label fertile eggs

Are there any other stores where they sell fertile eggs? I was thinking about getting some from the farmers market nearby.....anybody have luck with FM eggs?

On the Valentine's hatch I set a dozen TJ eggs.  Ten developed, two quit early, two quit late and 6 hatched.  One chick did not thrive and died the first night.  The other five did great and I sold them immediately.  They wanted a white egg layer for a mother who wouldn't eat brown eggs (silly woman).

I also set a dozen "cage-free" eggs from the local food co-op.  Ten weren't fertile (they didn't claim to be), one developed but did not hatch and the 12th is currently walking around the brooder.  It's 16 days old, a marans and looking at it today, probably a roo.

Nice job with those TJ eggs thumbsup.gif 6 out of twelve hatched, thats better than some shipped eggs I've had lol
