Chicken Tips Do's and Don't's

I am a huge advocate for Sand as bedding. Especially if you have a smaller flock. It's so much easier to clean the coop and compost the poop when you don't have all that extra bedding to deal with. I just use a reptile scoop or kitty litter scoop and it only takes 5-10 minutes a day or every other day just scoop out the poop and put it in a bucket or directly in the compost bin. When I had pine shavings I had so many and they took so long to decompose. I LOVE SAND!

An alternative to the sand is the Sweet PDZ. I'm switching to it after this round of pine shavings is done. Same clumping quality but with the added benefit of odor control and moisture removal.

Caveat: probably not economical for large areas, but in high poop traffic areas such as under roost bars, worth every penny IMO.

Build your coop to fit your climate. I now only build three sided coops here in Texas. The heat is really hard on birds worse than the cold. I position the coop to block off the cold winds but let the prevailing winds help keep the birds cooler in our forever long hot summers. Here's an example if you notice in this picture the way the flags blowing is our prevailing wind. The wind is blowing straight into the coop. The pic was taken in mid summer. Also. notice the deck above their run this really helped shade the birds. This pen houses Bob Whites but if you notice behind this pen there's another coop that houses some of my chickens.
