You have to get this perfectly level for the water to work and then sometime it still leaks. You have to monkey around with for it to work. The handle is welded cheaply and busted off...

Leghorns are great egg laying chickens. They are friendly to other Leghorns and can easily fly. The only problems is that they are bad in the pecking order and they can make a mess of the yard....

seem like a good breed, if i had the room i would probably raise a batch of them they seem like they would be a good 4h starter show bird...considering i dont see many of this breed in my class...

It's been a long time since I posted on BYC. My 5 girls are now just about 2 years old and they are doing very well. I'm the one with the problem. This is the second spring that I've had the itch for more girls. So I'm saying screw it and I'm going to pick up a batch of new girls and soon. Going to need to build another coop and will probably go with something small and easy. Not really sure but I figure I have two months once I get them to figure that out . So please, don't tell the wife. But the brooder will be set up in the basement real soon!

Got 6 today ...3 brown leghorns and 3 buff orpingtons..I think

Very exciting!

I'm due to be getting a new batch of chicks soon too, we get new ones maybe every two years to replace the layers which are wearing out.

The oldest is now almost 4 years old. I can't believe how long I've had chickens.

Part of my flock is going on 2 years old and the remainder going on three years. I definitely have seen a drop in egg production. I am adding 20 new chicks to my flock this year. A little less than 2 weeks away! I will get some of them on Apr 6 and the remainder on Apr 13. I will be thinning about 7 birds from my existing flock. 20 will be replacing 7... Next year I will likely replace the remaining 20 older birds.

1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 2 Gold Laced Wyandotte, 1 BLRW, 1 Columbian Wyandotte, 4 Rhode Island Red, 6 Easter Eggers, 3 Barred Rock, 3 Welsummer, 2 Buff Orpington, 2 White Leghorn, 2 Brown Leghorn, 3 Gold Sex Links, 2 Delaware, 1 Mixed Maran. And a partridge in a pear tree... (just kidding on the partridge).

Yes it is very exciting. Woke up this morning around 230 and couldn't stop thinking about new girls and have been up ever since. Went to the basement and cleaned up the brooder and started to set it up. My girls are 2 years old like I said. I've got only 5 and still see 2 to 3 eggs a day. Haven't had 5 in a long time. I'll see what this summer brings and see if the change in seasons helps or not. But yes, very excited about new girls

Just hope she doesn't go to the basement and move you down there with them. lol I love my hens, and i too will have some to replace next year.

I'll probably be the owner of five chickens soon too, and I'm excited to see what that'll be like. I've never had so many. I'm a tad worried about fighting, as the other two groups didn't get along at first.

not really replacing any, more like adding to, but putting up a seperate coop. Then when the older ones have slowed way down in the laying dept, I can find them a new home and start with another fresh batch with their own home. Picked up 6 tooday. 3 brown leghorns and 3 buff orpingtons . at least thats what I think they are.

A good way to prevent this is to keep them seperated for a few weeks but where they can see each other and interact. I have a little "chicken nursery" in my coop. Its a 5x5 area that seperated by chicken wire and framed with 2x4s. So all the chickens get to know each other before theyre let loose together. This is also how i introduce younger chickens into my flock. There may be a few discrepencies over pecking order, but there wont be bullying like if you just throw them all together. I was given this tip when raising guineas, but it works well for all poultry.
