Drowning chickens?

Okay I'm not sure if it would work well or how humane it would but does anyone ever drown their chickens instead of cutting their throat? We culled or first rooster a few weeks back and it went okay for our first time except he got away from me when I was bleeding him out so I caught him and got him with a hatchet and my wife got a face full of blood splatter lol, other that that it went fine. The other day My wife and I were talking at bed time and she brought up that supposedly drowning is one of the most peaceful ways to die and she thought maybe next time we could drown the chicken instead? I'm not to sure if it sounds like a good idea but I told her I would post on here to see what people had to say, so...... anyone ever drown their birds?

From my own experience, drowning is NOT peaceful! More like one of the single, most terrifying thing you could ever experience! It is also not a very slow process (or at least it sure didn't feel like it to me!). While I would HOPE everyone would care about how much the animal would suffer, you also need to think about the massive adrenaline rush, trying to fight to get that breath and stay alive.

I know that chickens aren't protected like most domestic animals, but where I used to live, several workers at the pound were charged with criminal charges for drowning cats.

Good luck and please try to come up with a more humane method.

That should say it is not a very QUICK process! It's the middle of the night and my insomniac brain just doesn't always work! smile.png

I was honestly just humoring my wife with this one. I really have no desire to even attempt to drown a chicken. I am quite happy with the quick and easy cutting of the throat and severing its brain from the inside of the mouth. I can now say the celebratory "I told you so" to her when she gets home from work lol. Thank you for the reply.

LOL! wow, you sound like a great husband (no offence, just funny what you said, no offence meant)

 

yes drowning a chicken is the WORST way to kill a chicken

LOL at the "I told you so". smile.png Sounds like something I or my husband would do! smile.png Good luck with the processing the next time! I am still battling to get up the nerve to try it and I wish there was a "no hands on way." Looks like I am going to be trying the head removal method, however.

And, Kagu, I came VERY close. When I was 12. Was unconscious when I was removed from the water and rescued. It was absolutely horrifying. Even now, at 41, I still have my little issues with water I fight to overcome.

This sounds like a terrible idea. Chickens are scared of water and it will take them ages to die. Suffocation doesnt feel nice, especially when your respiratory system is full of water.

I can think of more humane ways to kill a chicken. My brother almost drowned (he's in his 60's) and he claims it was a very peaceful experience hmm.png but if I had choice I WOULD NOT want to drown!!. If you get a killing cone it will help to hold the chicken so that it won't get away from you.
