Whoops! It IS Illegal. :( Discreet Chicken Keeping Tips?

This will be a great lesson for your daughter. Teach her now that rules don't apply to her. I just hope that doesn't backfire on you though.

Civil disobedience IS a good lesson for her daughter. Bad laws should be disobeyed, and restrictions of freedom should be resisted. America has enough sheep. Please don't raise any more. Government permission to own CHICKENS?! It would make George Washington weep.

You apparently believe there's no good reason for limiting livestock in an urban setting. I don't agree.

We're talking about three chickens. "The land of the free and the home of the brave", and the OP needs government permission to own THREE CHICKENS.

I just caught up with this thread and saw the last few posts and thought I would add a note.

I'm by no means a scofflaw and I did spend some time thinking about the implications of breaking the municipal zoning code. What I decided was that as a tax paying property owner in the United States, I have the right to pursue my interests on my property as long as my interests don't interfere with the rights of my neighbors to reasonably enjoy their own properties. I listen to their dogs bark day and night and their dogs and cats urinate and defecate on my property - they can put up with a few clucks emanating from under my back porch.

I don't apologize for or hide my chicken keeping but neither do I flaunt it and so far we've had no disputes with the neighbors. It *is* a matter of civil disobedience and if the issue ever comes up, I'm prepared to make a case to the City Council to overturn the ordinance. The city next to mine voted down a pro-poultry ordinance by one vote last year, so the issue is on the radar here.

I'm not a community organizer, I'm just someone pursuing my dream on a little piece of land in the city that I pay taxes on (serfdom, really). I hope that maybe others who have similar ideas will see what I'm accomplishing and will pursue their own interests, as well.

I have a blog here: http://5400squarefeet.blogspot.com if anyone is interested.

Happy Chickening,
Yanna

Maybe this might help you a bit...

I got a permit to attach a small animal structure to our house citing "home pet habitat". I had to submit plans which were structurally sound. I had a local contractor draw them up. It was kinda a pain, but this covered the coop(home pet habitat) and showed that yes my chickens are considered "pets" and do not fall under farm animals.

The city approved the plans and that is all that I need to keep my chickens legal

If you were to follow this route, make sure you don't mention "chickens" at any point. Just say small animal . Good luck
