We ordered 25 baby chicks, two of them roosters. The company sent us 27, one of which is another rooster ( on the packing slip). Now we have a mottled Cochin that has, what looks looks like, a red comb starting. They are 5 weeks. Could this still be a female or does anyone know if you can tell on these type of chickens at this age? The mottled Cochins my mother ordered where from the straight run :(. Since we got all of them as babies could they get along better or do we now need to find a new home for 2 roosters instead of one? Any input would be most welcome. Thanks!

Hi there! I am by far no expert, but I have a 3 month old black Cochin and she has a small comb on her head that appeared when she was about 2 months old. It is rather small and she is a good size at just 3 months old. I don't know if this helps you out or not....sorry I couldn't help anymore!!!

My buff cochins both turned out to be boys. By 3 weeks old, they had red waddles and their combs were definitely bigger than my other chicks. I am pretty sure, although I don't have any pictures, that by 5 weeks their combs were red - and their waddles were definitely red...

Here's a picture of one of them at about 3 weeks old. Hope it helps identify yours...

It sounds like it might be a cockerel. I have a cochin, the same age, I've just come to the conclusion it's a pullet.

As for the boys being raised together, it definitely helps. My boys that were 4 months old when introduced get along almost too well, it's bizarre....

Without a pic it's hard to say, but I ordered 6 straight run blue Cochins, 5 started developing much different than one within a couple of weeks. By 4 or 5 weeks their combs wattles were getting big and pink, and the one I suspected a pullet still didn't have anything. The boys also feathered much bigger. They are now 7 weeks and what I suspect are boys have red combs and wattles and the girl has next to nothing and it's skin colored still. I don't know how I will find a home for 5 roosters! It was a bad choice to try straight run, but it is my son's favorite breed (his only other blue Cochin died early a couple of years ago from a genetic problem). I think the area I live in is inundated with unwanted Roos right now...very sad...Cochins are so sweet I don't want them to end up on someone's plate.

Thanks for all the input! My mother read that you usually get hens in straight run so she bought 6 straight run :(. We are trying to find a home for our speckled Sussex but most want hens. I don't want the Roos hurting each other but if we can manage to keep an extra (other than the two we planned). I would like too. We have a huge variety of breeds and we'd like to keep all but I'm afraid that might not be possible. I'll try to get a pic of the suspected roo here shortly and post. Thanks again!

I'm new to cochins, I have a pair of lemon blues and then this single baby chick that I believe is a buff pullet. They're 4 weeks old, now....Maybe at lunch I can post a pic....We can compare birds!

I have a lot of a lot of hens that have some pretty big wattles! And the hens have combs too...some really big! All my babies have some combs...that is 30 babies...so unless they are all roo's..it's really hard to tell! There are a couple of my 4 week old chicks that look like they are roo's...I would be surprised if they aren't ...but on most hard to tell!

I have one hen that had me believing she was a roo when she was a little chick becuase her comb and waddles were much more pronounced than the other chicks. She has a big 'ol floppy red comb and waddles... but she lays eggs and has never crowed!

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm hopeful that he will still be a she but it really isn't looking like it. I guess I'll know when he crows, lol. Here is the pic I promised. Looks to me like a comb and some wattles starting..... Thanks again for your help!
