I have just joined BYC tonight, and am also new to raising chickens. I know this subject has come up before, and fear criticism for bringing up the subject, but wanted to know if anybody has found an affordable recipe for homemade organic chicken feed? All the recipes I've seen have so many ingredients in them, they sound intimidating and expensive. I read the posts about the BEST chicken feed ever (Ronda's Whole Grain Chicken Feed), people were saying that it's expensive and also questioned how great it really is. Then I found this recipe online that says it's cheap, but it too sounds expensive.

2 parts whole corn
3 parts soft white wheat
3 parts hard red winter wheat
1/2 part Diatomaceous Earth (not the kind you put in your pool)
1 part hulled barley
1 part oat groats
2 parts sunflower seeds
1/2 part peanuts
1 part wheat bran
1 part split peas
1 part lentils
1 part quinoa
1 part sesame seeds
1/2 part kelp

Please go easy on the green horn that I am! Our family is short on cash, but we want to have healthy food for our family. I have been having some health problems that we think are directly related to our diet. I thought I could ask you more experienced folks for advice. Is this the best route to go? Does anybody out there use Ronda's Whole Grain Chicken Feed recipe? Please help!
Thanks!

Wow, good for you for taking the time to find, buy, and mix all that! I was wondering if there was/is an organic layer feed available but I didn't want to have to do what you do. You rock!

Thank you, ChickensAreSweet and dominiques, for your comments and advice! Any help and encouragement is very much needed. I want to find a way to feed the flock that's healthy for them and our family, without breaking the bank to afford it. If you come across anything else, please pass it on!

Here's a question for you - I've heard that soybeans are not good for folks concerned about estrogen intake, and fish meal contains mercury. What can you substitute for these ingredients? Thanks in advance!

I'm a newbie to raising chickens myself, so I can't help, but I do applaud you! We're pretty impoverished too, and high-quality feed has definitely been a financial burden, even with only five laying hens. Not sure I'll ever have the gumption to make the feed myself (and besides, I can't afford to buy all those ingredients in bulk at once), but I am certainly curious about your experience with it! Who knows? If you find it to be easy maybe I'll follow suit!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

By the way, are you raising chickens for eggs, meat, or both?
