Molting

My Hens are molting. Cadbury has stopped laying and won't let me pick he up . Is that normal?:/

My understanding is it's painful when a chicken molts so don't pick them up . I have one molting right now and she usually lets me pick her up but right now I can't get anywhere near her.

Should I seperate my hens from my roo if they are molting and he is not? Or could I just make em saddles to protect them.

If feathers are missing from their backs it's from over mating, not a molt. Separating the rooster will help them not lose anymore feathers and hen saddles can help, but feathers won't grow back until fall when an actual molt occurs. I accept some feather lose as normal and only intervene if the skin is affected.

really not much you can do with molting.  some can recovered a month up to six months. Some people give them lots of protien, like cooked eggs, or canned cat food.    they should be fine as long they have shelter  no need for heat.  As for roosters you will have to show  him whose the boss,  you can squirt water gun at him.  I usually just stand there and let him fight me until he will stop !  (Im a lady, so doesnt scare me!! LOL!  )  But may not work for all breeds!  some are meaner than another ! Good luck.

I find if I chase the rooster trying to catch him, he spends his time running away from me. Establishes me as dominant. He'll behave for about a month, then get aggressive again. Repeat.

You are creating a man-fighter by inserting yourself / humans into the pecking order. You will learn better through hard knocks and having to euthanize roosters.
