Black Bear

I purchased non-lethal shotgun shells to deal with this as we have bears in our area. Haven't had to use them yet, thank goodness. I have a trail cam picture of a bear walking through my yard but he left the chickens alone.

Interesting it's always good to have some form of protection not all bears are like yogi

I spoke with my mail carrier this afternoon. He tells me this bear has been quite busy - and although my bear and the people's I'm in touch with are one and the same, there is another one out there. (yeah not a grammatically correct sentence I know - lol) A female. A nearby farmer has lost 18 chickens - and has a kill permit for the @#$! bears. They certainly have a taste for chicken.

On a side note - driving down the road today - there was a dead RIR in the middle of the road. About 2 miles from my house - not in the path of where the bear has been spotted. It looked freshly killed. I've never seen a chicken dead in the road in my life. Very odd indeed.

There might be another predator living off the bears activity. A fox or coyote or coon. That might be how the rir got there. Either that or a bird of prey picked it up but could not handle it and dropped it. Or even an rir that got away during one of the attacks and happend to cross the road at the wrong time.

Small update - since the poor bear ran away with the bacon flavored "OFF" can, he's not been back as far as we can tell. He is still
out and about - I get sporadic reports from the other side of his territory - but so far, so good! That other flock, which was reduced from over 30, down to a dozen now - by said bear, has been relocated to another farm - and inside an electric fence. Hopefully this will help disrupt his pattern and he'll move on... for good.
