A Bielefelder Thread !

At what age do the roosters start crowing? Just wondering if I can keep my little boys for the summer or if I should sell them before my travels....don't want my neighbor to be bothered by the crowing.

I am really impressed so far by how strong and smart these chicks seem compared to the Orpington chicks I have hatched out before. The Bielefelders really seem to have it together. Good thing, too, cause their "mama" seems to randomly give the closest chick a hard peck every once in a while. She is taking care of them, but I think she is a bit ambivalent about motherhood, lol.

She is probably just keeping the darn chick in line!

My biele roo started crowing at 12.5 weeks. It sounded quite funny at first, like he wasn't sure what he was doing! He has mastered everything but the timing of it. He crows well after sunrise!

Have you talked to your neighbor about the crowing? Technically, we aren't supposed to have Roos because of the noise ordinance, but all my neighbors are ok with mine... I've asked them to let me know if it becomes a problem. Then I might try one of those collars before I finally give them up. My second guy is only 9 weeks old, and a Crested Cream Legbar.

Enjoy them! Kaiser has just started being the last one into the coop at night. He has also started trying strut his stuff with the girls. One of the Silver Lace Wyandottes turned around and yanked out a couple of his feathers, so he left her alone!

Ok, 12.5 weeks, that's pretty early. Yes, my neighbor is a very quiet guy who lives by himself & doesn't like noise. We had an Orpington rooster that hatched last Fall & the neighbor complained about him. We found him a good home with lots of hens though (the rooster, not the neighbor). :)

That's funny that your Wyandottes have attitude with the rooster; mine were the same way. The Wyandottes rule the roost at my house & they wouldn't give my rooster the time of day, lol.

My Pet Chicken on their Wyandotte page says the temperament of Wyans have a tendency toward domination. I'm glad I read that blurb and talked with a couple owners before I got a Wyan. My flock are all smaller and timid breeds and Wyans are bigger and can be bossy even as chicks. They are so gorgeous in all their varieties but I decided to pass them by

There's no real hard and fast rule for crowing age. I've had some begin crowing at 3 weeks of age, which is positively hilarious to hear. Others have been a few months old before they started. This has been true of my Biels as well as all of my other breeds. Some boys just can't wait to sing.

They're huge and gentle.

My 14 week olds (seen below) are the same size as my year old hens and almost as big as my year old rooster.

This one is standing on a 25 lb treat block.

This pic is a couple weeks old.
