Hi there,

I have white marans and wheaton marans. Could this cross produce a Columbian maran? I've been looking into this, and on the Marans of America page is says that the wheatons carry the columbian allele, it evidently must be crossed with silver to produce the columbian, but I am not sure how to begin.

Thanks!
Chris

I don't know, but it seems like it would be better to use a black tailed buff marans? I hope someone will come along and give you some details on how to genetically proceed. It sounds like it would be a cool project!!

Hmmm.... that is a good point when just looking at them. remove the buff and keep the black... Thanks for the reply. I saw all your dark eggs and am covetous. We are trying to get there too.

Might try contacting Lynnrae Troples in Pennsylvania. She has been working on Colombian Marans for years. Her online name is paintedbones as she is an artist too.

No, white maran and wheaten maran wont give you columbian marans, and No the wheaten maran dont carry the Columbian gene, the columbian gene Co/Co is need it to create the columbian phenotype, the columbian gene is an autosomal(none sexlinked) dominant gene, meaning if you cant see it on the wheatens then its not there.. how can you see it? well you will have an all white bird with black tail and black hackles(and black saddle)...

can you recreate a columbian like bird? yes but you will have to introduce the columbian gene the maran breed.. get your self a columbian breed close to the maran standars and mate it to your wheaten maran hens...

Columbain Rock Male mated to Wheaten Maran Hens

using the chicken calculator
http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html

will produce 100% Columbian Hens and 100% golden Columbian rooster, cross him back to wheaten maran hens, this will produce some silver columbian hens and some gold columbian hens, also some gold columbian males and some golden columbian males.

at this stage it would be up to you to decide if these birds are close to maran standars to mate sibling together(silver columbian hens to golden columbian roostes) to obtain more like them, OR if you keep crossing the golden columbian males to wheaten maran hens to produce a few silver columbian hens and a few golden columbian rooster..

how does a golden columbian rooster looks? well they look kind of in the middle between silver columbian and gold columbian..

this is how they look

how does the Golden(S/s+) wheaten(eWh/eWh) Columbian(Co/) Barred(B/b) roosters look

this is how they will look

dont mind the barring gene here..

Thanks so much Nicalandia! I see what you are saying. I got confused reading the "marans of america" site - because wheaton is present on the columbian, but not the reverse. The link you sent has helped me understand.

What if the white had Co/co? Then if the whites have silver I would get 1/4 columbians right? If possible I would like to stay with the maran bird to retain leg feathering and dark eggs...

Thoughts?

Thanks again!
Chris

I dont think the white marans have Columbian in them, they seem dominant white.

Nica,
What about using White Marans with Birchen Marans? Any Co there?
Karen
no, that wouldn't work. Birchen is ER/ER S/S ar/ar
