Here is my first bit of advice for "newbies" or anyone in general.

Make sure you plan you coop, run, and breeding pens (if any) very carefully. If I would have planned my barn and coop more carefully it would have saved me HOURS of trouble. Please think it threw before jumping into anything. Also, keep your chicken's housing and stuff sanitary at all times. Its easy for mites, bugs, and sickness to get into your flock.

I'm new to chickens.i started reseaching the idea of keeping my own chickens when i moved to the countryside back in August.i just joined in this flock so i can get a better idea of what I'm about to get into.over the past five weeks or so at a few hours a day,I have managed to build a coop, gather aall the things I need, and I'm almost ready for my first chick. Thanks to this site and all the helpful information on it,I'm this much closer to keeping chickens, and doing something to eliminate more outside dependence, and that much closer to self-suffientcy

Looks like a great coop. Are you planning on getting more chickens later? 28 sq. feet is totally enough for 9 chickens.

hi i have had 3 hens and 1 rooster for about a year now (had another hen that died recently) the rooster has been a bit scary sometimes coming up behind me and pecking sometimes but i have that under control now he knows who's boss!! my problem is he has taken to the little brown hen in particular and at every chance jumps on her the other 2 hens peck her while he is on her, she has taken to staying in the shed while the other 3 'pal'around outside (they freerange) we clipped her wings to stop her escaping but this means she is stuck with them, anyway the man i got the rooster from has agreed to take him back (i didnt want to kill him) and has offered me a replacement a cock with 3 hens already with him,i'm wondering if its a good idea to have another rooster or just go with the hens, he's really spoiled my experience with the hens while before they were very tame any advice would be much appreciated thanks:/

Well are you planning on breeding chickens?? If not there is really no point to having a rooster. I find roosters can be very troublesome and mean. If you are going to breed than you have to have a rooster, but if not I don't see a point to having a rooster.
Hope that helps.
