Hi, I have a 5 week old Brown Coturnix quail that has hurt himself by jumping up and hitting his head on the ceiling of the cage. His head is all cut up and I think that I can see skull. I am guessing that the wound has been open for a few hours. Right now I have him in the house in a box with food and water. I am giving him medication every day. Is there anything else I can do to help him?

I have had a bobwhite butcher a coturnix like in a Saw movie...and it recovered perfectly.

Make sure it is eating and drinking and clean any blood from over the eyes. Do not wet the injured area though as it might induce infection. If you can medicate the injury...better. Keep separate from the others to avoid cannibalism and make sure that from now on the top of your cage is "quail safe"!

Do you think that it is a possibility that another one of the quails injured him? I just found out that one of the male quail in the pen was bullying another quail but I moved some birds around and now everyhing is okay. I found out about the bully after the one quail was injured.

He may have been injured from another quail or trying to escape being injured from another quail and did in fact hit his head on the ceiling or both. You may have too many quail crammed into one cage or it is time to separate them in the proper ratio.

Get the injured one under a heat lamp for a day. Put some blu-kote on his head. It has antibacterial properties to it and will disguise the wound so the others won't pick at it. If you don't have blu-kote, you can use some neosporin for now. Even pine tar will work well.

Maybe it is a combination of the 2! Quail got hurt jumping around and as soon as the bully saw the blood he pecked at him. My gf always says that men are animals...is she right?!

Anyway, keep him alone for a while but I am sure he will recover if he is eating and drinking.
