I have a 6 month old Jenday conure his name is Sunny! My problem is "he is very Smart for his feathers!!!!". He steps up with no problem, loves to be on anyones shoulders but then loves to bite the earlobes, and flies away from me when I want to put him back in the cage. Coaxing him with treats don't work anymore. We have our routine of showering in the morning, eat breakfasts then back to the cage is a chore. Out again early evenings. Whenever anyone comes through the door he squawks and I greet him. He seems to be a very content bird. He's like a two year old who doesn't want to take a nap! Any and all suggestions would be greatful
Please help

I am not a fan of birds being allowed on shoulders. Smaller birds are not such a problem, but even conures can cause some injuries! I've seen a lot of people have some pretty serious injuries that were pretty unexpected. First, I would recommend trying to keep the bird off of your shoulder to avoid bitten earlobes!

Next it seems like the bird needs to relearn the step up command. I'm also not a fan of clipping wings as it can really be detrimental to some birds when they are immobilized like that. Instead, have him step up and step down a few times each time you go to take him from the cage. Get him used to "ladder walking" on your hands and when you want him to move to your other hand, use the command "Step-up".

Maybe in the morning, let him out, but don't feed him breakfast until he goes back to his cage. That will help him associate the cage with a good thing, instead of him equating cage with you leaving.

Good luck! We had a few birds that hated going back in their cages and it took a lot of work getting them to go in when we asked!

i said to clip wings because the bird is flying away from them. it also makes the bird tamer(more obediance) and safer(can't fly out the door). when my conure grows his flight feathers back he acts differently and will fly around the room or jump off my shoulder suddenly. my bird loves to be on my shoulder and is looking at the computer screen as i type.

I agree with Cubalaya, clip his wings. Its not forever they will grow back. Just until he learns his manners if you don't want to keep them cliped. I have 4 Indian Ringnecks and 3 cockatiels 2 yellow sided conures. I keep all mine clipped. Its for their safety. I look at it this way what would hurt him more... the loss of his ability to fly (which he will adjust to) or flying into the toilet ceiling fan boiling pot of water or out that door or window?
I do not let my birds on my shoulder either. Keep them perched on your hand and wrist with your elbow down they can not run up your arm.
The cage issue is a simple fix when you take him to his cage bring his favorite treat with you and put it in a special bowl before you put him in make sure he sees you do that. His greed will take over and he should go right in. Tell him what a good boy he is and calmly close the door. Works everytime with stuborn little guys.
