hi everyone! i MAY have an egg-bound quail and i'm not sure what to do. i have read to put her butt in warm water and massage her belly. hopefully, this will help her pass her egg. if it doesn't, what do i do then? if she does pass the egg, do i need to keep her away from the rest of the quail after it comes out? if i do, for how long??

*getting worried*

If the warm soak doesn't help, then you can use mineral oil. I have never had an eggbound quail, but I have had an eggbound chicken.

You might need an eye dropper to administer it. Be careful not to break the egg because the shell can cut the hen inside.

Can you feel a stuck egg?

Try soaking her lower half in a warm Epsom salt bath. Many times the Epsom helps with blood flow and extract the egg. Keep her soaking for about 15 mins. You will have to hold her in the water. Keep us posted.

Thanks everyone for all the help. She died in my husband's arms last . We believe the egg broke inside her. It was a rough night.

But I appreciate all your assistance.

I am so sorry about your bird.

Question: How can you tell that a hen is eggbound? My quails do not really lay on a regular basis so I cannot really tract their lying patterns.

Nichrome, the hen will look sick. Lethargic, not eating, drinking. She may wattle around like a penguin, moving slowly. She won't be pooping, and if she is, it will be diarrhea. Many times if you inspect the hen you can feel the stuck egg. Sometimes it is right there at the vent. If you apply some pressure on the outside of her vent, you can feel it or sometimes see it there. You can also feel, on the outside, up from the vent to between the legs. Sometimes the egg is coming down the oviduct and is not moving. You can feel it there as well.

If a bird is moving around in the normal way, eating and acting completely normal, just because she is not laying, doesn't mean she is egg bound. They will look pretty ill if they are suffering from a stuck egg.

Always provide lots of calcium to help prevent this from happening. :)
