Zip ties for leg bands?

not if you clip the ends close...i am considering using them...i often use them to hold my hair back while working on my truck as for some reason i often break my actual hair bands.. why not use them for chicks.

I used them to identify the roo I wanted to keep when I had a couple. I made it loose and after several weeks when I was more able to identlfy him I cut it off. Had no problem but I did keep an eye on it and cut it off before it became a problem. He was 2 or 3 months old when I put it on, not real young.

Where is the cheapest place to buy colored zip ties? How much is the norm to pay for them?

==========
I buy colored zip (cable) ties at the dollar store. They come in small and kinda-large, and about 5 different colors. Was $1.00 for a variety of about 30.

Just gotta remember to check regularly (couple times a week, especially when growing). We have 51 chicks right now, in 4 different groups, and about 13 have bands for various reasons (want to keep my eye on, possible crossed beak, etc.).

It's easiest to put them on when you have a helper: someone to hold the chick still (usually belly up), and someone to carefully place the zip tie on the leg. Don't completely tighten but do test to see if it is too loose to get over all 4 (or 5 for silkies) toes.

Here's a web site I found today http://www.9thtee.com/zipties.htm

They have 4" 100 ct zip ties (basic black) for as low as $0.99 but they have alternative colors - including fluorescent - in 4" 100 ct zip ties for as low as $1.20.

Now, if you order just 100, the shipping will not make sense as it'll add up and when you break it down, it's ridiculous. I'm planning on breeding some birds tho' and using multi-colors for keeping track of various information (month of hatch, year of hatch, what hatchery they may be from if I ordered new chicks for the gene pool, possible mother hen, possible father, etc) so I need a huge multitude of them to work out the logistics. Ordering 1400 (one of every color) WITH shipping is adding up to $24.08 - which breaks down to $0.0172 per tie.

I haven't found them cheaper for the wide variety of colors offered (14 different ones in the 4" size)... yet!

I have been uing zip ties for new chick all eason & it has been a good system for me but have adjuted to brooder ue only. I now permanently wing tage them as they leave the brooder into the grow pens. I had a few slip by that still had zip ties on their leg & almot crippled them. It is harder to keep track of them after they leave the brooders. I wait until they are a couple of weeks old them wing tag them & take their zip tie off. Once they are grown & I want to recognize them on sight I put a colored Zip tie on them again, by breeder. I can look up the record on the computer that way without catching them to check their wing tag #.

Be sure to cut the extra length off the tie once you have it adjusted, then the likelyhood of it tightening is very remote.

This is what Telephone Companies used to identify their cables

25 different color ties. A bit over kill if you don't have a large flock. Does give one a lot of options.
