Wet and Dry Fowl Pox - Graphic Pictures of Pus and Scabs

@casportpony Do you know why so many of your hens got wet pox? Everything I read says that wet pox is rare. I just lost 2 turkeys to wet pox. It was my fault, I thought it was just fighting injuries so I did nothing 😭 feel so guilty.
I am so worried my other birds will get it. I had never seen wet pox nor dry pox before this. We don't have mosquitoes this time of year so I have no idea how the 2 turkeys got infected.
Oh no, I am so sorry for your losses. :hugs Not Sure why so many got it, and I got a bunch with pox right now. So far, only two had the wet form, and they both died because I did not notice they were sick.

OH NO. I think I live in the same general area as you. Do you think migratory birds could have brought it in through mites or lice?? This is scary :(

We haven't had any migratory birds here this year, so I think mine got it from mosquitos.
are there mosquitos in december?

also, Thank you for making this very informative thread. I had no idea that my turkeys had wet pox until I saw this.

I found this article. https://www.jstor.org/stable/1590183
Scientists infected 3 groups of chickens with fowlpox virus. First group got the virus from a comb scratch, second group got virus eyedrops, third group got virus throat swab. Comb scratch infection turned into dry pox. Throat swab infection turned into wet pox and 45% of the birds suffocated to death. Eye drop infection spread from the eye duct to the throat and created lesions in the mouth. They guessed that gnats were spreading wet pox by flying into chickens eyes.

@casportpony I have a question about your hen #5 . How did you know that was wet pox? I have a turkey that has eye swelling like that, but I wonder if it is mycoplasma.

it is still spreading despite the cold weather. now one chicken has wet pox :hit

We've had freezing temps (30-32 degrees) and I've seen 3 or 4 mosquitos. I didnt see them all at once, but noticed they were on the southside of our house buzzing around the side door to our garage. I suspect they were trying to get in the garage where it's warmer, then if they get lucky, into the house. We've had that happen before.
We're expecting night time temps in the low 20's later next week, it should kill them all.

I havnt dealt with wet pox, but I have dealt with dry pox. I do know that birds with canker have a bad foul odor coming from inside their mouth.
Years ago, I knew someone that had dealt with wet pox. She said there wasnt any odor that she could tell, but ended up culling several birds since they couldnt swallow food due to lesions in the mouth and esophagus, they wouldve starved to death if she didnt cull.

Bloodwork is needed to test for MG.

All of mine are wet pox, with the black warts around the beak and yellow stuff in the mouth. No foul odor. The last turkey that died sounded like he was breathing through a stuffy nose. I think his throat filled up with pox and he suffocated. I have not had anyone recover from wet pox :hit

I wonder if there is a respiratory disease at the same time, because the one with the swollen eye looks like it could be MG.

Zoologix is a company that tests for MG but they don't accept samples from California :hit
